The first official trailer for the highly anticipated film The Flash dropped at Super Bowl LVII, propelling the excitement to new heights. Few were more thrilled than Sasha Calle, who will play Supergirl in the film. She wrote on Instagram alongside the trailer:

“Holy shit! This is so so wild! It’s so beautiful and exciting to finally share this with you all! I have fallen deeply in love with Supergirl. Getting to know her and feel her has been one of my greatest honors. This moment is so so special.”

Sasha lived in her native Colombia for two years before the family moved back to the United States

Sasha Calle was born on 7th August 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts, to Samira Calle. She is of Colombian descent.

For the first decade of Sasha’s life, she and Samira lived happily in Massachusetts. “She [Samira] worked very hard to make me happy,” Sasha told Soap Opera Digest. Sasha told the outlet that Samira suddenly decided to relocate to her native Colombia.

Sasha had family in Colombia and enjoyed the region’s outstanding beauty, but she struggled to fit in. She explained: “It was a beautiful place but there was a language barrier. I knew Spanish and I could write it, but not to the extreme that everybody else could because that was their day-to-day.”

Sasha also had to adjust to Colombia’s more extensive curriculum, which had more than double the subjects offered in the United States. After spending two years in Colombia, the family moved back to the United States.

“At that point, we were living in a basement at a friend’s house in Boston and struggling financially,” Sasha said. “My aunt in Florida was like, ‘Just come live with us,’ so we ended up moving there. And that was right after my brother was born.”

Samira’s financial situation gradually improved, and she found love. Sasha walked her mother down the aisle during Samira and Kevin’s wedding ceremony. The actress stated:

“I did everything. I was the maid of honor, I walked her down the aisle and I sang. I even made the soundtrack for walking down the aisle. It was church music and then midway, it changed to a Pharrell song. It was really cute.”

Sasha Calle is the first Latina woman to play Supergirl

Sasha Calle will play Supergirl in her first feature film appearance. She beat more than 400 auditioners to the role. The Flash director, Andy Muschietti, told Deadline: “I saw more than four hundred auditions. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.”

Sasha will be the first Latina actor to play Supergirl. After landing the role of Lola Rosales in The Young and the Restless, Sasha told her alma mater, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, that it was important and an honor for her to represent her community on screen. She said:

“We are so thankful for the opportunity to represent our Latin American community through this platform. We don’t take it lightly; we truly hope to inspire. We all grew up in Latin American households. Now it’s our opportunity to proudly share that with the world. We hope you see the love, respect and appreciation we have for our culture.”

The role in The Young and the Restless changed Sasha’s life: it showcased her talent to the world and improved her finances. She told Soap Opera Digest:

“I can buy food! I used to look at my bank account and everything had a concern, and now it’s just so different. I was struggling a lot before I booked Y&R. Now I can go into a grocery store and not worry about how much it’s going to cost.”
