One of the most successful movies that came out this fall was Crazy Rich Asians. This movie was based on a book that was written by Keven Kwan in 2013. Directed by Jon M. Chu, this romantic comedy is about an economics professor, Rachel Chu, who is played by Constance Wu, who goes to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young, who is played by Henry Golding. Also starring in this movie is Akwafina as Goh Peik Lin.

Nick and Rachel were going to Singapore to attend the wedding of his best friend. Nick was also taking Constance to meet his parents. As you might guess, things do not go as planned.

Crazy Rich Asians has been a big hit at the box office. As of November 25, 2018, it grossed $236.6 million. Of this, $173.9 million came from the United States and Canada, and the other $62.7 million coming from worldwide sales. It has received very good reviews critics as well.

Crazy Rich Asians has also been nominated for several People’s Choice Awards. It is up for the Comedy Movie of 2018, and both Constance Wu and Akwafina are up for the Comedy Movie Star of 2018.

Of course, what we all want to know is if Crazy Rich Asians will come to Netflix.

Behind the Scenes

It just so happens that Netflix almost acquired the rights to production and distribution of this movie. If this had happened, Crazy Rich Asians would likely be available for streaming today.

The creators of the box-office hit, Crazy Rich Asians, turned down an unbelievably generous offer from Netflix to buy the rights to make this movie and any subsequent sequel(s). Instead, they sold the production and distribution rights to Warner Bros, even though the offer from Warner Bros was far less generous.

Apparently, the reason for this was that Warner Bros offered much more in the way of creative freedom.

Sadly for us, this means that Crazy Rich Asians is not available on Netflix. Indeed, it is not available to stream anywhere right now. If you want to see this movie, you have to go to the theaters.

On the other hand, this does not mean that Crazy Rich Asians will never come to Netflix, or does it?

Warner Bros’ new streaming service

Right now, there are many Warner Bros movies and television shows on Netflix, including Shameless US, Gotham, Friends, and The Flash. Given that, theoretically, once Crazy Rich Asians has finished its run in theaters, it still could come to Netflix.

The problem is that Warner Bros has announced that it will be releasing its own streaming service in late 2019. Unless Warner Bros and Netflix come to some arrangement, it is far more likely that Warner Bros will stream Crazy Rich Asians on its own site rather than releasing it to Netflix.

So, the chance of Crazy Rich Asians ever coming to Netflix looks pretty slim right now.

What will this mean for the Warner Bros films and TV shows that are already on Netflix?

There is a good chance that many of these shows will leave Netflix, but probably not immediately. Netflix currently owns licenses to stream these shows for a certain length of time. During this time, your favorite shows will remain where they are. When the license agreement expires, however, Warner Bros can decide not to renew and to move these shows to their own network.

While Crazy Rich Asians is unlikely to come to Netflix, some other shows that might be of interest are To All the Boys I’ve Love Before, The Princess Switch, and Jane the Virgin.
