On July 19, 2019, The Lion King is scheduled to appear for the first time in theaters. This will be a remake of the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name and will premiere on the 25th Anniversary of the original movie. The Lion King is produced through photorealistic computer animation, so it will simulate real lions and other wild animals. This is following the recent trend of the production of live-action movies of older Disney films.
The plot of the original Lion King is based very loosely on Hamlet, with an evil uncle who attempts to gain the throne through murder and trickery. From all appearances, the remake will follow the story of the original very closely.
Below are some of the all-star cast of this remake:
- Simba: John Glover
- Young Simba: JD McCrary
- Nala: Beyoncé
- Young Nala: Shahadi Wright-Joseph
- Mufasa: James Earl Jones (He also played Mufasa in the 1994 original)
Other names that will be appearing are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, John Kani, John Oliver, Alfre Woodard, Eric Andre, Florence Kasumba, and Keegan-Michael Key. The Lion King is directed by Jon Favreau, who also directed Jungle Book.
The original Lion King grossed about $968.5 million worldwide at the box office. After that, there were a number of spin-offs including a Broadway musical that won a Tony award. The soundtrack included songs that were composed and written by Elton John and Tim Rice.
Only four of the songs from the original soundtrack are said to be in the remake. These songs are “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “Hakuna Matata,” “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” and “Circle of Life.” There will be new songs in The Lion King (2019) including a collaboration by the original composer/songwriters and Beyoncé.
It is too early for reviews to be available for The Lion King (2019).
Will The Lion King (2019) Come to Netflix?
Unfortunately, The Lion King (2019) will not be coming to Netflix.
Disney and Netflix had a contract that covered all new releases between 2014 and 2018. Sadly though, that contract will be coming to an end at the close of 2018, and it will not be renewed. That is because Disney will be launching its own streaming service, Disney+. The Lion King (2019) will be one of the first newly released feature films to appear on this new service.
Is the original The Lion King available on Netflix? Again, the answer is no. It is available for purchase through Amazon Prime Video and iTunes, however.
On the other hand, you may be interested in the Netflix film, Mowgli, Legend of the Jungle, which is the live-action/computer animated story of a boy raised by wild animals. The Disney live-action versions of Beauty and the Beast and 101 Dalmatians are also available. Other Disney movies that are streaming on Netflix right now are:
- Tarzan and Tarzan II
- Pocahontas and Pocahontas II
- Mulan and Mulan II
