Spider-Man fans will get a special treat this December. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will come out in theaters in the U.K. on December 12, 2018, and in the U.S. on December 14, 2018.
This movie will star Shameik Moore as Miles Morales/Spiderman. The original Spiderman was Peter Parker, but in the storyline, he was killed and shortly after that Miles Morales appears as the new Spiderman.
This movie will be set in a multi-verse in which many different people will take on the role of Spider-Man. One of the Spider-Men will be Peter Parker, who will be voiced by Jake Johnson. Other Spider-Men will be Spider-Man Noir, voiced by Nicholas Cage, and Spider-Ham, a.k.a Peter Porker, voiced by John Mulaney. There is even a Spider-Woman, Spider Gwen, who is voiced by Hailee Steinfield.
Spider-Man has appeared in many live-action films, the first one being the unauthorized short, Spider-Man in 1969. Spider-Man has also been a frequent character in many other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films.
Will Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse be coming to Netflix?
That is actually quite a complicated question. The characters were created by Marvel Comics. If Marvel had partnered with Disney on this project, we could be very sure that it would appear on Netflix. This would fall under Netflix’s contract with Disney, and we would almost certainly see it on Netflix after several months.
As it turns out, however, in February of 2015, Marvel made a deal with both Disney and Sony. According to this deal, Disney has the rights to Spider-Man as part of the MCU when he is not the main character. When he is the main character, however, Sony has exclusive rights to distribution.
Sony has two different distribution companies, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Animation. Sony Pictures Entertainment has a contract with Starz, and thus movies distributed by this company appear on Starz rather than Netflix after their run in theatres. Spiderman: Homecoming was one of these films, and it did appear on Starz, not Netflix.
Sony Pictures Animation, however, has a contract with Netflix. If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse falls under Sony Pictures Animation, then it will appear on Netflix this Spring. As of now, however, there is no way to know which distribution company this movie falls under.
Unfortunately, we will not know until this coming Spring whether Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will appear on Netflix or not.
As of the present, it does not seem like any of the Spider-Man movies are on Netflix in the U.S. Some of them, such as The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, may be available in other regions.
If you want to watch super-heroes on Netflix, there are plenty of other options, however. Some of these options include three seasons of Supergirl, four seasons of The Flash, and three seasons of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. You might also enjoy the movies Catwoman and Ironman & Captain America: Heroes Unlimited.
