On June 26, 2019, Spider-Man: Far From Home premiered in Hollywood. It was released in China and Japan on June 28 and will be coming to theaters on July 2, 2019. This is the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, and it takes place after the events of Avengers: Infinity Wars. It is being released by Sony Pictures Releasing.
In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Tom Holland will star as Spider-Man/Peter Parker as he did in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In this installment of the Spider-Man franchise, we see Peter Parker reluctant to use his powers as he is trying to be a normal teenager on a school trip. He even leaves his Spider-Man suits at home. As is common in such cases, he is attacked by villains and has to fight them in spite of his intentions.
Unlike Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Far From Home is set in the regular Marvel Cinematic Universe, although there are significant references to the Multiverse in this film. This film was written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and directed by Jon Watts. Other cast members include Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, J.B. Smoove, Jacob Batalon, Martin Starr, Marisa Tomei, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Additionally, Tony Revolori, Augourie Rice, Hemky Madera will be reprising their roles from Spider-Man: Homecoming.
This movie has received favorable reviews, receiving an aggregate score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. It did not fare as well on other review sites, though. For example, it only received a weighted score of 69 out of 100 on Metacritic.
Will Spider-Man: Far From Home be coming to Netflix?
With all complicated business deals and all of the different streaming services that are coming out in the near future, in most of these articles, the answer to this has been negative. In the case of Spider-Man: Far From Home, however, there may be good news.
It is not certain, but Spider-Man: Far From Home may be coming to Netflix.
As mentioned before, Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In February of 2015, Marvel made a deal with both Disney and Sony that split the rights to the character of Spider-Man. Disney has the rights to him whenever he is not the main character. When he is the main character, though, Sony holds these rights. This is why Sony and not Disney is the distribution company for this film.
When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse came out last December, we were not sure about whether it would come to Netflix. As it turns out, however, it has, and it is available for streaming right now!
So, in reading the tea leaves as to whether Spider-Man: Far From Home will be coming to Netflix, this seems to be a very good sign! It is not certain because Sony Pictures Releasing has two subsidiaries, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Pictures Animation. The former has a deal with Starz, and the latter has a deal with Netflix. It is still unclear which company Spider-Man: Far From Home falls under, but the situation does look promising.
Additionally, there are still some films from the MCU still on Netflix, including;
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Thor Ragnarok
- Ant-Man and the Wasp
- Black Panther
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
