On December 19, 2018, Mary Poppins Returns will be appearing in movie theaters. This movie is a sequel to the 1964 Disney musical classic, Mary Poppins, which starred Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, and Glynis Johns all played supporting roles. The original Mary Poppins received 13 Academy Awards nominations, and it won five, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews. It was the only one of Walt Disney’s films to earn a best picture nomination while he was alive.
The first Mary Poppins was set in 1910 Edwardian London. In this story, a disciplined no-nonsense businessman, George Banks, has to hire a replacement nanny for his children, Jane and Michael, after their previous nanny quit because they ran away from her. Mary Poppins comes in as the new nanny. She has magical powers, and she teaches the children and their father how to have fun.
About Mary Poppins Returns
Mary Poppins Returns is the direct sequel to this classic film, and it is set in London in the Great Depression. Jane and George Banks are now adults. Being released 54 years after the first film, it marks one of the longest gaps between a movie and its sequel. It is directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee. Both Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns are based on a book series by P.L. Travers.
In this sequel, Emily Blunt plays the role of Mary Poppins, and it has an all-star cast of supporting characters, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, and Meryl Streep. Dick Van Dyke will be returning as the son of one of the characters he played in the first movie.
Mary Poppins Returns was chosen as one of the top ten films of 2018 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. It also received four Golden Globe nominations including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
When Will Mary Poppins Returns come to Netflix?
Very soon, we will no longer see Disney content on Netflix. That is because Disney will not be renewing the distribution contract it had with Netflix. According to this contract, all new Disney movies released between 2014 and 2018 would be released on Netflix.
The reason that Disney is not renewing its contract with Disney is that it is starting its own streaming service. This means that starting in 2019, new Disney films will come to Disney’s streaming service and not to Netflix.
Luckily for us, Mary Poppins Returns falls inside the Disney/Netflix contract, so it will be coming to Netflix! In fact, it will be the last new Disney film to do so!
We can expect Mary Poppins Returns to come to Netflix between July and September of 2019.
Sadly, if you wanted to prepare by watching the first Mary Poppins, you will not be able to do so on Netflix. It does seem to be available for purchase on Amazon Prime, however.
