The movie Apollo 11 is a documentary made using the actual footage from the moon landing in 1969. It was directed by Todd Douglas Miller, who also produced it along with Thomas Petersen and Evan Krauss.
Apollo 11 premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2019, and it appeared in theaters in the United States on March 1, 2019. For the first week, it appeared only in IMAX theaters, and it opened in regular theaters on March 8, 2019.
This movie commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission that brought the first people to walk on the Moon.
In 2017, Todd Douglas Miller’s production team cooperated with NASA and the National Archives and Records Administration to gather footage for this project. In the process, they found 70 mm footage from the launch and recovery of Apollo 11 that had never been released. This footage covers scenes from the entire mission. There was also more conventional footage from 35 and 16 mm film.
Miller and his team took all of this footage and transferred it to digital format. Apollo 11 was made entirely from this footage. They sorted through 11,000 hours of audio recordings and hundreds of hours of video recorders to put together this film. Apollo 11 does not contain any voice-over narration or any contemporary interviews. The only interviews are those that were taken at the time. This movie is meant to be an immersive experience to honor this historic mission.
Apollo 11 has received phenomenal reviews with an aggregate score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics and reviewers reported being awed by the footage, and some said that the movie took them back in time. Many felt like they were witnesses to the actual event.
