Altered Carbon is a refreshing breath of fresh air in the oversaturated sci-fi genre. Season 1 was based on Richard Morgan’s book with the same name. The first season had a great story, and we can expect more great storytelling in the coming seasons. When the show started, the showrunners stated that the plan was to have 5 seasons of the show.

The first season premiered in February 2018, and it’s nearly two years since we last saw a new episode of Altered Carbon. However, we expect to get season 2 very soon. Keep reading to find out all you need to know about Altered Carbon season 2.

When will Netflix release Altered Carbon season 2?

It has been confirmed that the 8 episodes of season 2 will premiere on 27th February 2020. The news was relayed via the show’s official Twitter account.

Netflix announced very early on that we would get Altered Carbon season 2. Shooting for the second season started in February 2019 and concluded in late June 2019.

What happened in season 1?

Altered Carbon is based On Richard Morgan’s cyberpunk novel with the same name. The show is set in the 23rd century, a time when technology has allowed the human race to cheat death. A person’s consciousness is stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine. That consciousness can be transferred into another body known as a ‘sleeve’.

The show follows the new life of a violent mercenary known as Takeshi Kovacs. He is woken from a 300-year slumber at the behest of wealthy aristocrat, Laurens Bancroft. Laurens is the richest man on earth, and he wants Kovacs to find out who killed him.

Laurens last back up into his stack was just a few hours before he was killed. It means that when he was transferred into a new body, he had no memory about who killed him and why. Police ruled it a suicide, but Laurens is convinced that he was murdered, and he wants Takeshi to find the murderer.

Takeshi has 2 choices; either solve the murder of the wealthiest man alive or spend the rest of his life behind bars. He chooses the former, and he embarks on a journey of a lifetime.

What to expect in Altered Carbon season 2

The show’s showrunners have hinted that season 2 might be very different from season 1. It is unlikely that the show will continue to develop season 1’s storyline. The showrunners might choose to adapt the other Richard Morgan novels written about Kovacs.

If the showrunners choose to adapt the books, we will be treated to an entirely different setting. The next book, Broken Angels, is set 30 years after the events in Altered Carbon. The events also happen in an entirely different planet, and that means that we will say goodbye to Bay City.

There is also a suggestion that the series will diverge from the books. The showrunners have stated that Altered Carbon will run for five seasons. There are currently three books with Kovacs story, and it means that if they choose to stick with their plan, they will have to diverge from the books at some point. That diversion might happen in season two.

We can also expect that season 2 will delve into issues such as gender fluidity. According to TheWrap, the showrunner, Laeta Kalogridis said;

LGBTQ, and so many issues and the ways in which we feel comfortable or uncomfortable in our physical bodies, are things that I think the show is very right to explore, but has not yet been able to do.
