What would you do if you suddenly woke up in a world in which nobody but you remembered the Beatles? In Yesterday, Jack Malik, a struggling singer-songwriter, played by Himesh Patel, finds himself in this very situation. Near the beginning of this movie, there is a strange global blackout. During this blackout, Jack gets into a bus accident. When he wakes up, he finds that nobody else remembers the Beatles. He takes the opportunity to perform their songs, claiming them as his own. This causes him to rise to global fame.
In addition to Himesh Patel, Yesterday stars Lily James as Ellie Appleton, Jack’s childhood best friend. It also stars Kate McKinnon as Debra Hammer, Jack’s American agent, and Ed Sheeran as himself. The screenplay was written by Richard Curtis, and the movie was directed by Danny Doyle.
One large part of the expense of making this movie was gaining the rights to the Beatles songs. Apparently, the British production company, Working Title, paid around $10 million for these rights.
Yesterday had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on May 4, 2019, and it will be coming out in theaters on June 28, 2019.
Yesterday has received generally good reviews, with an aggregate rating of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers found it charming, but many felt like it could do more with the premise than it did.
Will Yesterday Be Coming to Netflix? Where to Stream and Watch.
When Yesterday completes its run in theaters, will you be able to see it on Netflix?
Unfortunately, Yesterday will not be coming to Netflix.
Yesterday is being distributed by Universal Pictures. Universal Pictures has an exclusive contract with HBO which will last until 2023, so Yesterday will be going there once it finishes in theaters.
There are also new rumors that add to the unlikelihood that Yesterday will ever go to Netflix, even after the contract between HBO and Universal Pictures expires. Apparently, like Disney and Warner Bros., NBCUniversal has plans to launch its own streaming service.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years, and how many streaming services consumers will be willing to pay for.
