Boogie is a film about a basketball prodigy looking to earn a scholarship to an elite college and eventually make it to the NBA. Alfred ‘Boogie’ Chin (played by Taylor Takahashi) has the requisite skill and talent to make it to the top, but he faces challenges that might derail his career progression.
He has to endure the weight of expectation, navigate a new relationship, and deal with on-court rivalries. Boogie represents Eddie Huang’s directorial debut, and it is scheduled for release on 5th March 2021. The film will feature late rapper Pop Smoke (real name Bashar Jackson).
Is Boogie coming to Netflix?
It is unlikely that Boogie will come to Netflix.
The film’s distribution rights like with Focus Features, which is owned by Comcast via its subsidiary NBCUniversal. NBCUniversal is unlikely to hand streaming rights to Netflix as it is working on populating its streaming service Peacock.
Focus Features also signed an exclusive content deal with HBO in 2013 that keeps Focus’ films off of Netflix. The deal was set to run for a decade. Therefore, the earliest that we can expect Boogie on Netflix is 2023.
Where will Boogie be available for streaming?
The most likely destination for Boogie is Peacock. NBCUniversal owns Focus Features, and it’s, therefore, expected that Boogie will head to Peacock after its release.
It is also very likely that Boogie will appear on HBO. Focus Features’ content deal with HBO still has two years left to run. It is unclear whether the film will remain on HBO after the deal expires or if the parties will look to extend the deal.
