SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most popular Nickelodeon shows. The series first aired in 1999 and it has gone on to receive widespread fan and critical acclaim. SpongeBob currently has 12 seasons, and a 13th season has been announced. There are also a couple of spin-off shows and a prequel set to be released.
However, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for SpongeBob SquarePants. The show has experienced dips in popularity and controversies have emerged over SpongeBob’s intended sexual orientation. However, the series has survived these pitfalls, and it continues to dominate. This piece will focus on SpongeBob SquarePants’ availability on Netflix.
Is SpongeBob SquarePants available on Netflix?
Nickelodeon first licensed SpongeBob to Netflix in 2009. At the time, streaming wasn’t popular, and in 2013, Nickelodeon pulled the show from Netflix due to poor ratings. In 2018, Netflix returned to some regions, including the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Canada.
In October 2019, Netflix listened to fan requests and added SpongeBob to most of its regions. However, Netflix doesn’t have all seasons of the show. The number of seasons of SpongeBob on Netflix depends on the area. Most parts have seasons 5-7 while other regions like Thailand have season 1 and 2.
More good news arrived in November 2019 when Netflix and Nickelodeon reached a deal that would see SpongeBob episodes appear on Netflix. The agreement included the production of a spin-off project based on the character Squidward. Based on this deal, we expect that more episodes of SpongeBob will come to Netflix.
We also expect that more Nickelodeon characters will come to Netflix. Nickelodeon’s president Brian Bobbins stated in a press release, “Nickelodeon’s next step forward is to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal.”
