Gerard Way’s inspiration to come up with a comic book series came while on tour with My Chemical Romance. He enlisted the help of Gabriel Ba to come up with the design for the comic series. The first issue came out in September 2007, and more than a decade later, Gerard Way’s comic book series is the inspiration behind the Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy.
Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy blew us away, and we know that production for season 2 is already underway. This article will let you in on everything we know about The Umbrella Academy season 2.
When will Netflix release The Umbrella Academy season 2?
Filming for season 2 began in June 2019, and thus we predict that the series will be available on Netflix in late 2020. Season 2 could drop earlier, and we will update you once we get an exact release date.
We expect to get more seasons after the 10 episodes of season 2 air. Gerard Way confirmed that he is working on more volumes of the comic books, and that means there will be more content for the series.
What happened in The Umbrella Academy season 1?
The Umbrella Academy centers on seven of the 43 kids born at the same time to different mothers, who weren’t pregnant the day before. Sir. Reginald Hargreeves adopts the kids and teaches them to become superheroes. The kids eventually go their own ways, but they reunite after Sir. Reginald’s suicide.
Sir Reginald named the kids in numerical form, and each had a specific storyline. Luther, number one, was the de facto leader of the group. Diego was the most selfless individual of the group, and he helped the others out with their personal issues.
Number three, Allison, had a rollercoaster season, which ended with the loss of her voice and powers. Allison lost her powers after confronting Vanya about her boyfriend. Klaus, number 4, finally kicked his drug habit and discovered the true extent of his ghost-seeing powers.
Number five was the hero of the season, as he used his powers to take the transport the team back in time, thus saving them from the apocalypse. Ben, number six, was dead for most of the season, but he used Klaus’ powers to affect life among the living.
Vanya was the unfortunate villain of the story. She found out that the true extent of her powers, thanks to her jealous boyfriend, Leonard. Vanya went on a rampage and killed Leonard, destroyed the Academy, and caused an apocalypse by destroying the moon.
What to expect in The Umbrella Academy season 2
Number five used his time-traveling powers to teleport the gang back in time at the end of season 1. Season 2 will probably focus on how the kids deal with Vanya’s threat. Vanya caused the apocalypse, and she remains a danger until the kids can find a way to help her.
The kids have an advantage over Vanya because they know how destructive she will be if Dr. Hargreeves hides her powers. We might see Dr. Hargreeves train Vanya in season 2 rather than hide her powers. The Commission will surely be angry about The Academy’s plans, and we expect retaliation.
Season 2 is expected to be based on the 3rd instalment of the comic series, Hotel Oblivion. However, Netflix has shown a tendency to deviate from the comics, and it would be unwise to rely on them to predict what will happen in season 2. Season one dealt with material from Apocalypse Suite and Dallas, and there were big plot differences between the series and the comics.
According to IndieWire, the showrunner Steve Blackman stated that the intention is to stay as close to the comics as possible;
“The goal is not to diverge… the goal is keep on trucking behind them, beside them. Things will deviate, but the goal is to try to be true to the source material.”
