Directed by Nicholas McCarthy, The Prodigy is a horror thriller film about a child whose behavior suggests that he is possessed by a supernatural, or even evil, force.

On February 8, 2019, The Prodigy was released in theaters by the revived Orion Pictures. Orion Pictures was the distributor for many famous films in the 1980s and 1990s such as The Terminator, RoboCop, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures, and The Silence of the Lambs. The company declared bankruptcy in 1991, but then it was integrated into MGM and resurrected in 1996. Despite this, there were not any films released under that label between 1999 and 2014, when the logo was revived again.

The Prodigy is about a young boy, Miles, played by Jackson Robert Scott, who seems to have a genius intellect but who also starts displaying disturbing behaviors. His mother, Sarah, played by Taylor Schilling, takes him to a psychologist and she begins to suspect that he may be possessed. This film explores the mother’s internal conflict between her need to investigate what is going on and her maternal instinct to love and protect her son.

The Prodigy has received mixed reviews by critics. It received an aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes of 47%. Some critics lauded the film for being scary and well-made. Others thought that The Prodigy was too much like all of the other movies featuring an evil or possessed child.

The Prodigy had a disappointing first weekend at the box office. It was projected to gross between $8-11 million during its opening weekend. So far, it has only grossed about $6 million.

Will The Prodigy be Coming to Netflix?

Even though The Prodigy is not currently on Netflix, is it likely to come to Netflix in the future?

The Prodigy will probably not be coming to Netflix.

Orion Pictures is still owned by MGM. Some of the older Orion Pictures films, such as The Silence of the Lambs are on Netflix, but it is unlikely that any of the new films will come.

MGM has its own cable channel and streaming service called Epix. In the past, Netflix had a contract with MGM that gave it streaming rights to movies after they were no longer in theaters or on Epix. In 2015, Epix signed a non-exclusive agreement with Hulu, and as a result of that, Netflix pulled out of its deal.

This means that there is a possibility that The Prodigy will come to Netflix, but it does not seem likely.

There are other movies on Netflix that may interest you, though. One of them is the 2018 movie with a similar name and premise, Prodigy, in which a maverick psychologist tries to uncover the secrets of a gifted, but dangerous, girl who has supernatural abilities. Other psychological thrillers that you may like are:

  • Birdbox – a movie about the survivors of an ominous unseen presence that drives most people in a society to commit suicide.
  • Dismissed – a 2017 movie about an honor student who traumatizes his high school teacher and mentor when he does not get the grade he wanted.
