Welcome to Marwen is based on the true story of Mark Hogancamp, played by Steve Carell, who creates a miniature village to help him heal from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder following a violent attack. Hogancamp’s story was previously told in a 2010 documentary, Marwencol, directed by Jeff Malmberg.

Welcome to Marwen was released in theaters in the United States on December 21, 2018, by Universal Pictures. The screenplay was written by Caroline Thompson and Robert Zemeckis. It was produced by Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey, and Robert Zemeckis. Robert Zemeckis also directed it. Robert Zemeckis was also the director of Forest Gump. In addition to Steve Carell, Welcome to Marwen also stars Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Merritt Wever, Janelle Monáe, Eiza González, Gwendoline Christie, Leslie Zemeckis, and Neil Jackson.

Mark Hogancamp was an aspiring artist who was assaulted by white supremacists after telling them he liked being a cross-dresser. He received brain damage as a result of the attack which caused him to lose his memory of his past life. He built a miniature World War II village to help him recover his memories. This movie depicts his story and his healing journey.

Welcome to Marwen did not do well at the box office, and it received many bad reviews. It only received 26% on Rotten Tomatoes. The chief criticism seemed to be a lack of cohesion in the screenplay. There were a few reviewers that really liked this movie, though, and they thought that it did justice to the story of a true and remarkable recovery.
