A Dog’s Journey is a sequel to the 2017 film A Dog’s Purpose. It is based on a novel written by W. Bruce Cameron written in 2012 that has the same name.

The previous film, A Dog’s Purpose, followed the soul of a dog through several incarnations. During one of these incarnations, he developed a bond with a boy named Ethan. After many different lifetimes, he reunites with Ethan again when he is a 50-year-old man.

A Dog’s Journey continues the story of the same dog, only this time, Ethan asks him to watch over his wife’s granddaughter, CJ.

A Dog’s Journey is coming out in theaters on May 17, 2019, and is being released by Universal Pictures. Josh Gad plays the voice of the dog in all of his lifetimes. Dennis Quaid plays Ethan Montgomery and Marg Helgenberger plays his wife, Hannah. Betty Gilpin plays Gloria who is Hannah’s daughter-in-law and CJ’s mother. Emma Volk plays toddler CJ, Abby Ryder Fortson plays young CJ, and Kathryn Prescott plays CJ as an adult.

The author of the novel that this movie was based on, W. Bruce Cameron, also wrote the screenplay, along with Cathryn Michon, Maya Forbes, and Wally Wolodarsky. It was directed by Gail Mancuso and produced by Gaven Polone.

A Dog’s Journey got mixed reviews. Some critics were moved by the story, and others found it predictable and manipulative. The previous movie, A Dog’s Purpose, showed the dog dying in multiple different ways, which was upsetting to many of the reviewers, even though he kept coming back to life. There are fewer dog deaths in this movie, but critics still found it difficult to watch, and it was a tearjerker.

A Dog’s Journey will not be coming to Netflix.

The distribution company for A Dog’s Journey is Universal Pictures, and Universal Pictures has an exclusive contract with HBO once its movies finish in the theaters. HBO is an archrival of Netflix, so this means that it will not come to Netflix at all.

In the future, you may be able to watch A Dog’s Journey on Hulu, however. At present, the previous film, A Dog’s Purpose is available on Hulu with the Showtime add-on channel.
