On June 7, 2019, Dark Phoenix will be released in theaters by Walt Disney Picture Studios. It is the seventh and final installment in the main X-Men film series. It features an all-star cast, and it is the direct sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse.
If you are not aware of who the X-Men are, they are a team of heroes originally created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. They first appeared in American comic books published by Marvel Comics in September of 1963. Since that time, they have become one of the most successful of the Marvel Comics franchises.
The X-Men are mutants that are born with an “X-Gene” that gives them superhuman abilities. Their leader is Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, who founded Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
Dark Phoenix is based on an extended storyline, known as The Dark Phoenix Saga, which was originally published in comic books in 1980. The topic of this storyline was first addressed in X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, but the events in that movie were erased from the timeline by X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. This latest installment was designed to be more faithful to the original story.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is about the mutant Jane Grey, who is played by Sophie Turner. Jane Grey possesses the powerful Phoenix Power. James McAvoy plays Professor Xavier. Other members of the cast include Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Ty Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Jessica Chastain.
Sadly, though, the reviews from critics are quite negative. It only received an aggregate score of 22%, which is the lowest score that any movie of this franchise has ever received.
Will Dark Phoenix be coming to Netflix in the United States?
If you want to skip theaters and see Dark Phoenix at home on Netflix, will you be able to?
Unfortunately, Dark Phoenix will not be coming to Netflix in the U.S.
Walt Disney has acquired the rights to Dark Phoenix, and it will be starting a new streaming service, Disney+. This means that if you want to stream Dark Phoenix or any other movie that is owned by Disney, you will need to sign up for a new streaming service.
The scheduled launch date for Disney+ is November 12, 2019. The price will be $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year in the U.S. Disney may offer a lower priced bundle to subscribers of ESPN and/or Hulu.
What about other regions?
It is unlikely that Dark Phoenix will come to Netflix in other regions either.
Disney+ is to be a global streaming service. While it will begin in the U.S., plans are in the works for it to spread to other regions as well. In preparation for this, Disney is in the process of removing its content from all other streaming services in other regions as well. The cut-off date was March 2019. So, the only place to stream Dark Phoenix anywhere will be Disney+.
