Tony Romo’s reputation took another hit following his dismal broadcasting performance during Super Bowl 58. Fans criticized Romo for commentary gaffes and for speaking at inappropriate moments. Romo has faced such kind of criticism before for his unconventional style of broadcasting.
Tony Romo is not sick; he claimed he was healthy enough to rejoin the NFL
Tony Romo is healthy. He has healed fully from the multiple back surgeries he underwent during his NFL career. Romo told Men’s Journal that he pays special attention to his spine’s health. “I call it ‘elongate and activate’. If I am going to be active at all, I have to get things stretched out,” Romo said. He also praised his wife for feeding him healthy food.
In a 2018 interview on the Ben and Skin Show, Romo claimed he was healthy enough to rejoin the NFL. “Yeah, I’m healthy enough. That wouldn’t be an issue at all. That would be the least of my thoughts when it came to a decision like that,” Romo said.
Rumors sometimes emerge suggesting that Romo is ill. “Tony Romo sounds like he might actually be sick. That’s a tough voice unless he was smoking cigars the whole holiday season. Maybe they should have let my man sit this one out,” Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas tweeted in January 2021. Lucas uploaded the tweet days after CBS announced that Romo would miss a game due to COVID-19 protocols.
Despite being in good health, Romo’s career appears to be declining. Andrew Marchand said in The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast that CBS was so concerned about Romo’s regression that the network organized an intervention. Marchand said:
“Tony Romo needs to study more. He needs to be better prepared. As you move away from the sidelines, you need to do more work. I know CBS is aware of this. They tried an intervention last offseason. They knew, they anticipated this. That’s a credit to them, the people in charge there. But it has not gotten better.”
