Darla was one of the characters in the 1994 Universal Pictures film The Little Rascals. The film’s writers adapted the movie from a series of short films by Hal Roach that aired from the 1920s to the 1940s. Roach’s films followed a group of neighborhood children’s adventures.
The 1994 film portrayed the children in a modern setting. Brittany Ashton Holmes, then a 5-year-old, played Darla – Alfalfa’s sweetheart and forbidden love interest. The cast consisted of 4 to 9-year-olds exploring funny storylines. The film turned out to be a moderate success, but what about the actors?
This piece will look at Darla’s actor, Brittany Ashton Holmes, in 2021.
After giving up on acting, Brittany lives a private life with her husband in Los Angeles
Following her appearance on The Little Rascal, Brittany looked set for a long acting career. In 1995, she played Julie on an episode of Ellen, and later that year, she appeared as Dana in Red Shoe Diaries.
The following year she appeared in three films – Death Benefit, Circuit Breaker, and Humanoids from the Deep. After that, however, Brittany disappeared from the entertainment scene.
Brittany later wrote on MySpace that she had no plans to rekindle her acting career. She pointed to The Little Rascals as one of the reasons why she didn’t want to return to acting. Brittany explained:
“I was [an] actress when I was little and did this movie called The Little Rascals. It’s, like, really embarrassing to watch and I don’t want to act anymore.”
Brittany is reportedly living in Los Angeles with her husband and is a political science student. She’s expertly avoided the media since retirement as an actor. She also doesn’t seem active on social media. We, therefore, suspect that she enjoys a private life with her hubby in California.
Brittany initially turned down an invitation to appear for a 20th-anniversary photoshoot featuring The Little Rascal’s cast
Brian Pocrass, the organizer of The Little Rascal’s 20th-anniversary photoshoot, had a tough time convincing Ashton to appear for the shoot. “Like a lot of child actors, she was guarded, but after we spoke for a while, she trusted me,” Brian told HuffPost.
Pocrass stated that most of the cast appeared because they’d missed each other. “It all stems from the fact that they just wanted to see each other.”
Per a video of the reunion on YouTube by 22 Vision, the cast had fun at the shoot. “Everybody still has that core rascal inside of them,” Holmes said, standing next to her on-screen boyfriend Alfalfa (played by Bug Hall).
“The whole movie was a dream,” Brittany added. Ashton’s appearance at the shoot seemed to briefly reignite Ashton’s passion for film. In 2014, she appeared in a television movie titled We Hate Paul Revere.
Brittany’s return to acting was short-lived. Since 2014, Ashton has yet to grace our screens again, and we don’t suspect that she will soon. Despite playing a minor role in We Hate Paul Revere, Brittany proved that she’s still got it.
