Allan Gore couldn’t hide his concern when he called his neighbor to check on his wife, Betty Gore. It was unusual for her not to pick up or call when he was on a work trip. “I’m afraid it’s not good,” Jerry McMahan, one of Allan’s neighbors, told Allan. “It looks like she’s been shot.”
Jerry thought that Betty had shot herself in the head, but in truth, Candy Montgomery had slashed Betty with an ax 41 times, nearly decapitating her.
Allan wasn’t a suspect, but his confession about an affair with Candy directed police to Candy Montgomery. Candy admitted to the murder, but the jury acquitted her as she claimed self-defense.
Allan Gore lives in Sarasota, Florida, where he’s retired and in a domestic partnership
Allan Gore helped Candy Montgomery during her trial, informing the court that the pair mutually ended the affair. It discredited the prosecution’s theory that Betty’s murder was a crime of passion.
Three months after Candy’s acquittal, Allan married Elaine Clift and relocated to Sachse, Texas. Allan and Clift are no longer together, but it’s unclear when they divorced.
Gore currently resides in Sarasota, Florida. He is retired and, according to his Facebook page, is in a ‘domestic partnership.’
Gore’s estranged from his daughters but occasionally interacts with them on Facebook
Allan Gore and Elaine Clift initially took custody of Lisa and Bethany. However, the couple’s inhumane treatment of the children forced authorities to hand custody to Betty’s parents, Bertha and Bob Pomeroy.
According to Dallas Morning News, the daughters said they were estranged from Allan. They said Allan and Clift denied them food and made them take cold showers as punishment.
Bob Pomeroy said he saw Bethany with clumps of hair missing from her scalp. Allan and Elaine refused to comment on the story.
Lisa didn’t invite Allan to her wedding, suggesting that the Gore daughters are still estranged from their father. However, they are friends on Facebook, and Allan has commented on some of Lisa’s photos.
It’s unclear whether Allan maintains contact with Candy Montgomery, who now goes by her maiden name, Candace Wheeler. She divorced her husband years after moving to Georgia and works as a therapist.
Lisa Gore told Dallas Morning News that she doesn’t think she could ever forgive Candy: “I don’t know if I could ever forgive her. I know you are supposed to, but….”
Bethany added: “I wonder if she thinks about it every day, like I do. I wonder if she thinks about us. I just wish I knew what really happened. Because nobody knows but her. What angers me is thinking about what could have been.”
